More than 350 residents of colonial villages in Nyeri County have finally been issued with title deeds after waiting for 53 years after independence. The Cabinet Secretary,Ministry of Land Housing and Urban Development Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi issued the title deeds on Monday at Ruring’u stadium near Nyeri town. He was accompanied by National Land Commission officials and Nyeri Town MP Esther Murugi.
Beneficiaries drawn from Ithenguri, Gatitu, Kihatha, Kihuyo and Riamukurwe villages could not hide their joy as others broke into tears while others danced. The Ministry intends to issue title deeds to plot owners in 200 villages in Nyeri by the end of March, we will have 2,850 titles and the President will grace the occasion. Kaimenyi said adding that plans are underway to resettle all the squatters in Nyeri County.
Kaimenyi said that the Government will buy land at Solio Ranch to resettle them and the beneficiaries will be audited following claims therewere irregularities during allocation. On his tour to the colonial villages accompanied by the area MP Ms. Esther Murugi, the CS lauded the villagers for proper land utilization. Gatitu village was voted the best in terms of village planning as all the amenities were well situated. By George Omondi,Collins Okello
